Yamadai Mizuabu Project(YMP)

The American black soldier fly is a type of insect in the order Hymenoptera, and it is being actively used in research and efforts in food residue processing worldwide. This species was collected on the university campus, propagated using food residues at Yamagata University's Tsuruoka Campus, and utilized in various ways in society. Please check out our daily activities on Facebook and Instagram, and check out YouTube (link below) to see the recycling process.

From June 2021 until now (December 2023), we have been collecting food waste from Vert, the purchasing bookstore on the Yamagata University Co-op Tsuruoka Campus, every weekday, and recycling all of it nonstop. This resource is used for various purposes such as research, community contribution, and education.

Various social activities: Japan's mountain villages

For example, mountain village exchange. As part of Yamagata University's internationalization promotion project, exchange activities between international students, Japanese students, and local residents were held in Yamamoto, Sakata City. YMP actively implements and backs up these activities (link below is this year's implementation summary (in English)). This mountain village has also cooperated in testing Yamamizu compost (compost made from food waste).

Various social activities: Unexplored regions of the world

For example, in Indonesia, we work in various villages and mountain villages. The photo is me (hosted by Yamadai Mizuaborabo) and Mr. Yoyo (village public relations officer). Ciptagelar is a village (kingdom) in the mountains of western Java that is home to a king who has maintained a recycling-oriented society for over several hundred years. The king is well versed in modern equipment, has installed hydroelectric power generation facilities, and has a reliable internet environment. Yoyo has been cooperating in various ways, including the activities of the Japanese black soldier fly, and sometimes appearing online in university classes and local lectures. I sometimes conduct my graduation and master's thesis research in such places (mainly Kampung Naga and Juregongan).

Various social activities: Building a circulatory system

We regularly collect garbage from Shonai Hospital and turn it into resources at YMP. High school students from Shonai Agricultural High School are conducting cultivation trials using recycled Yamamizu compost. The vegetables grown were returned to the hospital and provided as meals to patients.

Various social activities: environmental education

As part of Yamagata University's community education program (Yamagata Stem Academy), we are implementing environmental education using raw garbage. This year, participants' household garbage was turned into resources (raised larvae of mountain worms) and fed to chickens, tarantulas, and goldfish. Next year, we are planning to hold the event jointly with a famous private elementary, junior high, and high school in Indonesia.

To all students who wish to join the lab

Diversity: Our laboratory is highly diverse, with members from many different nationalities. Many domestic members go abroad for graduation or master's thesis research (the photo shows fourth-year student Chiba doing an internship at a university venture in Indonesia). In addition, the laboratory operates through relationships with various people and organizations.

Research: Basically, the targets are black soldier flies and the organisms and environments that black soldier flies are likely to be associated with. When we think of black soldier flies, we think of food waste, and when we think of food waste, we think of food waste, which is diverse, and is turned into resources in various ways and used in various ways in society. is.

Member: That's why we're looking for as diverse a workforce as possible. Comrades and friends who are moving toward their goals. I want to be friends with the Japanese black soldier fly. I want to fly all over the earth as a black soldier fly. I'm sure you too will fall in love with the Japanese black soldier fly.
